Donating $1,700 to Charity. Week 6 – Big Brothers Big Sisters of Ottawa

Local DJ Sinsear dropped me a line on my Youtube video to offer up his suggestion.  He picked the ever worthy cause of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Ottawa.

A quote from their website

“Mentoring is about the power of friendship. The volunteers and young people in our programs experience the magic of everyday moments when they are shared with a friend. Everyone needs someone to laugh with, share a dream with, and just hang out… with friends it’s the little things that mean the most.”

I really couldn’t have said it better myself.  This is such a great cause, helping kids in a special way,  It’s just about being there.

I wanted to take a second to say thanks to everyone who’s touched base and offered a suggestion.  I have made note and will work my way through the list.  I’m trying to work on a first in, first out basis.  Though for any events or causes that are pledges for certain dates I’ll do my best to accommodate!

Donating $1,700 to Charity. Week 5

Time sure flies.  We’re at week 5 already and I’m happy that we’ve many more to go.  This week I’ve donated at the request of DoctorPhil of YouTube renown.  His wish was to donate to a cause related to Down Syndrome.

Upon doing some brief research on the CHEO website I came across a local organization called Down Syndrome Association – National Capital Region. They’re an Ottawa based organization that you helps you “learn about issues, activities and resources relevant to those with Down Syndrome in the Ottawa and surrounding areas.”  Their site has a forum where you can touch base with others, ask questions, and respond to others.  They also have a number of links and resources available for those who wish to obtain  additional information.

Donating $1,700 to Charity. Week 4

Heya folks, So we’re at week 4 of my quest to donate the $1,700 in change I rolled.

To give you an idea of the quantities.

7,650 pennies
1,250 dimes
864 quarters
760 nickels
300 toonies (two dollar coins)
96 loonies (one dollar coins)
and then there was a misc amount of dollar bills I’d traded in for change over time.

It seemed incredibly daunting at first. The massive piles of mixed coinage. But slowly, one handful at a time I got through it. I believe that it means more this way having rolled it by hand then it would have, had I got to the local market and paid 10cents on a dollar to have it sorted/exchanged for bills.

Recently Erika Saunders had contacted me with a suggestion to donate to a local non-profit organization called Recyclore. They’re a volunteer run organization providing the community with used bicycles and access to a do-it-yourself repair shop.  They even have an on-site mechanic to guide you in your repairs.

Items they’re taking in to recycle are as follows.

* Bicycles in any condition – none are turned away, even if it’s just scrap metal
* Bicycle parts and accessories – trailers, bags, tools, seats, reflectors, etc.
* Bicycle clothing – wash them first please

CheapIndianGuy donates $1,700 to charity

Over the last 10 years I’ve scrimped and saved my pennies, dimes, nickles and loonies.   I spent a wee bit of time rolling what feels like 100lbs in coin.   To the tune of $1,700 in change!  I’ve decided it’s all going to go to a good cause!  Actually to a number of good causes. 1,700 in Coins

I will be donating $50 per week until I’ve donated the whole $1,700.   So I’m looking to you for some suggestions on as to where I should be donating.  All worthy causes will be considered. Please just drop me a line here in the comments, on Youtube or via email.  Ravi AT CheapIndianGuy.com .  I’m looking forward to your input!

My Youtube video introduction to the CheapIndianGuy’s Donation plan is just below.   Cheers!
