Ravi Shanghavi is Donating $1,700 to Charity. Week 13 – Martin Luther Kindergarten

This weeks donation was a few months in the making.  Every year my friend Robert Alliman’s work has a raffle for the United Way.  And every year that raffle usually results in people winning generous amounts of computer goodies.   So I calculated this would be the perfect way to expand the donation coffers and meet a request presented to me by another friend Henrik Schwerdtfeger.

Henrik wished to purchase a laptop to donate to the german kindergarten he takes his daughter to.   So I pieced the two together and told Henrik no problem.  I would sort his request in the fall.

Now the original plan was to calculate the tickets sold and the prizes available.  Take a reasonable sum from my donation coffers, purchase raffle tickets.  Win laptops/desktops.  Give one to Henrik’s kindergarten, and sell the rest for profit.  The profit in turn would allow me to donate for a longer period of time.

Of course, the plan went a little sideways when the turnout for this years laptop raffle was double+ last years.  I did make out with two laptops.  One will be resold, at a break even pricepoint.  Whilst the other has been donated to Martin Luther Kindergarten of Ottawa.   Given the cost was over the normal $51 I donate weekly, Henrik and I chipped in $50 each to cover the costs of the raffle tickets purchased for each laptop.  Just to keep things fair and consistent.   Each laptop basically cost $150 in raffle tickets.

For background on the Martin Luther Kindergarten of Ottawa, I unfortunately don’t have much.  Other than it is operated with the help of the Martin Luther German Church  which I believe is a part of the Evanglical Lutheran Church in Canada.    And to add it takes great care of Henriks daughter Emma, which is the important part for me!

Burma, now Myanmar is almost a fabled land for me.  My family has many stories of their time there, my father especially has told of the beautiful country and its people.  A place I will surely visit.

It is his wish for week 12 that I donate to the children of Myanmar who were affected by Cyclone Nargis.   Cyclone Nargis killed some 150,000 people in Myanmar in early May 2008.  Displacing tens of thousands more.   The foundation providing aid to this region is Save the Children.

It is the graph below that drew my interest to Save the Children.

In fiscal year 2008, 92 percent of all expenditures went to program services. In fiscal year 2008, 92 percent of all expenditures went to program services. That percentage is an average for all of Save the Children's programs worldwide; the percentage spent on in any particular program may vary. Program Services 92%, Management & General: 4%, Fundraising: 4%.

Ravi Shanghavi is Donating $1,700 to Charity. Week 11 – Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario

Running behind on posting, but not on the cause! Week 11’s donation was made on behalf of Darcy P. to the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO).

For those not local to the Ottawa region, CHEO was founded in 1974 mostly by way of donations.  It was established to provide care for children aged 0-18years and is a “academic pediatric hospital affiliated with the University of Ottawa, with a mandate for care, research and teaching.”

Ravi Shanghavi is Donating $1,700 to Charity. Week 8 – NAAR

NAAR – National Alliance for Autism Research is where my week 8 donation went to on behalf of Juli.  The original request was to sponsor Dante’s Dream Team.  Though due to difficulties with their website, I was unable to make the donation to sponsor them.  The organization they are raising funds for though is NAAR.  Which I was able to donate to via www.CanadaHelps.org .  My donation portal of choice.  I’m a wee tardy on this update but I’ll be sure to make a mid week donation this week to bring my campaign up to date.   Best wishes to all, and many thanks for the continued support.  With good fortune I will be able to continue this indefinately.

Donating $1,700 to Charity. Week 7 – Children at Risk Ottawa

For week 7 I’ve made a donation on behalf of Margaret Sambol to Children at Risk of Ottawa.  This organization is dedicated to the assistance of children and families of those who are autistic.  For those who aren’t familiar with Autism or ASDs you can learn more here.

Some of the organizations goals are as follows.

  • Children at Risk seeks to increase public awareness of Autism and the impact this disability has on the child and on his or her family.
  • Children at Risk advocates on behalf of Autistic children and their families at the local, provincial and national levels.
  • Children at Risk fosters linkages with other local agencies or organizations in the community.

Donating $1,700 to Charity. Week 6 – Big Brothers Big Sisters of Ottawa

Local DJ Sinsear dropped me a line on my Youtube video to offer up his suggestion.  He picked the ever worthy cause of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Ottawa.

A quote from their website

“Mentoring is about the power of friendship. The volunteers and young people in our programs experience the magic of everyday moments when they are shared with a friend. Everyone needs someone to laugh with, share a dream with, and just hang out… with friends it’s the little things that mean the most.”

I really couldn’t have said it better myself.  This is such a great cause, helping kids in a special way,  It’s just about being there.

I wanted to take a second to say thanks to everyone who’s touched base and offered a suggestion.  I have made note and will work my way through the list.  I’m trying to work on a first in, first out basis.  Though for any events or causes that are pledges for certain dates I’ll do my best to accommodate!

Donating $1,700 to Charity. Week 5

Time sure flies.  We’re at week 5 already and I’m happy that we’ve many more to go.  This week I’ve donated at the request of DoctorPhil of YouTube renown.  His wish was to donate to a cause related to Down Syndrome.

Upon doing some brief research on the CHEO website I came across a local organization called Down Syndrome Association – National Capital Region. They’re an Ottawa based organization that you helps you “learn about issues, activities and resources relevant to those with Down Syndrome in the Ottawa and surrounding areas.”  Their site has a forum where you can touch base with others, ask questions, and respond to others.  They also have a number of links and resources available for those who wish to obtain  additional information.

Donating $1,700 to Charity. Week 3

The CheapIndianGuy is donating $1,700 to charities you suggest. I’m looking to donate approx $50 weekly to registered charities that people recommend, and give a small explanation in support of why.  So far I’ve gotten a number of recommendations on my Youtube video.

Today I had it in my mind to make the donation for this week.   By chance on Facebook I saw my old colleague Al McCreas invite to join the group “Please Help My Wife – Realize her Dream of Helping Others (Cancer Society)” .   Given I had a suggestion to donate to the Canadian Cancer Society this was ideal!  So I pledged $51 to help Al’s wife Julia accomplish her goal.  It’s true, everyone has been touched by cancer.  Please support the cause.   Thank you Al & Julia McCrea and nuri787.
