Ravi Shanghavi Ottawa

Still thinking about this, would love to encourage more people to donate.  We have so much to offer and many times we don’t realize it.  Time, our experiences, and our resources.

Ravi Shanghavi Ottawa

For a quick recap.  This is what this effort was all about.

So we did it folks. We’ve donated a total of $1,950 to charities! Congratulations! After 39weeks of donations on behalf of others this campaign comes to an end. It started with me rolling the below list of coins. I then decided instead of donating all of these coins to one charity, I thought it would be of greater benefit if I split the donations up. I took it even further by deciding I would donate to causes suggested by others on their behalf. I figured if I could just get a few more people thinking about donating to worthy causes it would help. We tried to do as many Ottawa based charities as possible.

7,650 pennies
1,250 dimes
864 quarters
760 nickels
300 toonies (two dollar coins)
96 loonies (one dollar coins)
and misc amount of dollar bills I’d traded in for change over time.

Below you’ll see the final list of charities and causes that have been donated to. Originally we’d have ended at 34 weeks but this was extended by generous donation by the Cheng family. So we’ve wrapped it up at 39weeks and $1,950 donated. Best wishes to all. – Ravi Shanghavi, Ottawa

Ottawa Donations

I’ve been thinking about creating a Ottawa Online blog dedicated to donations and volunteering.. still in the early stages of the idea. But if anyone has some suggestions they would be welcome.

Cheers, Ravi Shanghavi in Ottawa

Ravi Shanghavi is Donating $1,700 to Charity. Week 25 – The Dick Aldridge Pancreatic Cancer Foundation

On behalf of Chris Double this week we donated here. A brief background on The Dick Aldridge Pancreatic Cancer Foundation is below.

“The Dick Aldridge Pancreatic Cancer Foundation, has provided over $300,000 to support early detection  studies at Princess Margaret Hospital. There is a consortium of major hospital involved in this research that is focused on developing new early detection and screening methods and discovering a molecular and/or genetic marker to aid in the earlier diagnosis and screening of pancreatic cancer (such as now exists, for example, with prostate cancer). ~ We are proud to be the only Canadian Foundation fighting for the cause.”

Delayed posts

Hi Folks, I apologize for not updating as of recent. I have been donating regularly just yet to publish the posts! I recently received a donation of $250 to further my efforts. This will increase the period of time I will be able to make my weekly donations for! Very happy for this.

Over the last few weeks I have been working at purchasing socks in bulk to donate to local shelters. I will provide more of an update on those efforts soon. As always. Please feel free to drop me a line if you’ve any wish for me to donate on your behalf in the coming weeks!

A brief recap on why we’re here. This started out by my rolling the coins I’ve collected over the last 10+ years. These were offered when praying every morning.. Originally I had planned to donate these eventually to the temple. But made a person decision to help as many others as I could with what I had. It’s small I’ll agree. $51 a week may not amount to much. But every little bit helps. And if I can donate on behalf of someone who wouldn’t normally be able to, or wouldn’t have chosen to. It means all the more.

Ravi Shanghavi is Donating $1,700 to Charity. Week 14 – Conservation Halton Foundation – In Memory of Matteo D’Ermo

I was very touched when I read a post online by Bruno D’Ermo. So this weeks donation was made on his behalf in memory of his son Matteo who passed away at the young age of 4. In his memory funds are being raised to place a bench with a plaque amongst a small grove of trees.

Conservation Halton is a community based environmental agency that protects, restores and manages the natural resources in its watershed. It staffs a wide range of engineers, planners, ecologists and volunteers.

Ravi Shanghavi is Donating $1,700 to Charity. Week 12 – Save the Children of Cyclone Nargis

Burma, now Myanmar is almost a fabled land for me.  My family has many stories of their time there, my father especially has told of the beautiful country and its people.  A place I will surely visit.

It is his wish for week 12 that I donate to the children of Myanmar who were affected by Cyclone Nargis.   Cyclone Nargis killed some 150,000 people in Myanmar in early May 2008.  Displacing tens of thousands more.   The foundation providing aid to this region is Save the Children.

It is the graph below that drew my interest to Save the Children.

In fiscal year 2008, 92 percent of all expenditures went to program services. In fiscal year 2008, 92 percent of all expenditures went to program services. That percentage is an average for all of Save the Children's programs worldwide; the percentage spent on in any particular program may vary. Program Services 92%, Management & General: 4%, Fundraising: 4%.

Running behind on posting, but not on the cause! Week 11’s donation was made on behalf of Darcy P. to the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO).

For those not local to the Ottawa region, CHEO was founded in 1974 mostly by way of donations.  It was established to provide care for children aged 0-18years and is a “academic pediatric hospital affiliated with the University of Ottawa, with a mandate for care, research and teaching.”

Ravi Shanghavi is Donating $1,700 to Charity. Week 10 – Hindu Temple of Ottawa Carleton

Happy Diwali folks!!! Sal Mubarak today too!! (Happy New Year) For those who wish you may read up via wikipedia about Diwali here.    Making my annual trip to the temple for Diwali I decided to make a donation there.   I can still remember when it was first built, and the first Diwali standing in the basement as they’d just poured the foundation.  Time sure flies.   So for week 10 I made a $51 donation to the Hindu Temple of Ottawa Carleton.

Ravi Shanghavi is Donating $1,700 to Charity. Week 9 – Seva Foundation

On the suggestion of a kind reader, I’ve made a donation to the Seva Foundation.  I’ve copied below an excerpt from their site, I was immediately touched by this cause and feel most would also be.  Thank you for your suggestion!

“Seva Foundation started as a small group with a big idea, and the idea was this: To be fully human, we must translate our compassion and concern into useful service.

That simple statement conveys something about the nature of compassion that is expressed in most spiritual traditions around the world — that compassion is not just about helping those less fortunate than ourselves, it’s about the realization that we are all connected as one human family.

That sense of compassionate service motivates all of Seva’s work, as we build programs that support people around the world in their efforts to build healthy communities.

Seva’s programs, spanning many cultures and countries, share certain fundamental principles:

Serving the Underserved
Building Healthy Communities
Promoting Sustainability
Working Through Partnerships”
